Black Rock dentist turns 1!

December marked one year since Smile House opened in Black Rock. We had a sensational first year and have loved getting to know our new clients. In this article, we reflect on the journey so far and reveal some exciting news for 2018. Thank you for choosing us as your preferred Black Rock dentist! We look forward to taking care of your dental needs in years to come!

New beginnings

It was with great excitement that we opened our doors in December 2016. Dr Aliakbar Sefidroodi had worked at several other venues around Melbourne, and it was always his dream to have his own dental clinic. Dr Siamak Mardani, his business partner, had worked at a public clinic in the city and as a clinical teacher at La Trobe, as well as for a private clinic in the eastern suburbs. Together, they decided to start their own venture with the help of Ali’s wife Elly, who is a dental assistant.

The first step was to choose the right site. “We live around the corner and thought this would be a good location,” Ali said. “It’s close to the hospital and across from Tulip Street, which is busy. We bought the place in June.”

Over the course of six months, the team decked out the clinic with the latest dental equipment. The goal was to create a warm, welcoming space that resonated well with patients. “We named it Smile House because we wanted people to feel at home,” Ali said.

When the big day finally arrived, Ali and the team felt mixed emotions. “We were both excited and nervous,” he said.

A time of growth

Slowly but surely, word spread about the new Black Rock dentist, and Smile House soon developed a loyal following. In order to offer the best service possible, we opened up after-hours and weekend appointments. Siamak lives on-site, which allows us to offer flexible appointment times to our clients. We also invested in new equipment, such as a root canal machine to make treatments quicker and less painful.

In November, Ali finished a two-year mini residency in orthodontics. “It opened my eyes to a lot of things I didn’t know,” he said. “I think differently about growth and development. Even if someone doesn’t need braces, I can tell them how their teeth are developing and what problems are likely to happen.”

Reflecting on 2017

Overall, 2017 was a wonderful year for Smile House. We treated hundreds of new patients, many of whom were Bayside locals. Despite being a brand new Black Rock dentist, we were welcomed with open arms by the community. “Most of our patients are people who just live around the corner, or they know us from before,” Ali said. “We’re now one foot in the door and the patients are lovely people.”

“Running a business is a new experience for me and I have learned a lot,” Siamak added. “It’s been a very happy experience for me. The great majority of people are very kind and I’ve even formed some friendships with my patients. One even tried to find a girlfriend for me!”

Looking forward

We are excited about 2018 and look forward to creating enduring relationships with our clients. Siamak is planning to do more implant cases and will undertake professional development in that area. He also plans to complete the Fellowship exam through the Royal College of Dental Surgeons – the highest academic level of achievement with the College.

On a personal note, Ali and Elly welcomed a baby daughter this month. Baby Celena arrived on January 22 and is just perfect!

We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us in our first year. From the former patients who followed us to Smile House, to the new patients we’ve met along the way, we greatly appreciate your trust in us.
