Healthy Snacks for Healthy Teeth

Children’s diet, together with proper brushing and flossing techniques, play an important role is helping maintain good healthy teeth.

Foods which are high in sugar or acid all have a negative impact on your children’s teeth, causing dental decay and loss of healthy tooth structure.  Eating nutritious foods, low in sugar and low in acids will only benefit the long term health of your children’s teeth.

It’s important to check the labels of foods before buying, as there are many products that have a high concentration of complex sugar content.  Snacking on high sugar food throughout the day can only lead to dental decay.  Eat a wide variety of foods high in calcium and low in acid and sugar.  Enjoy eating cheese and fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrain cereal, lean meats, and other dairy products which will only benefits your child teeth as well as your hip pocket, in the long term.

Limit the amount of sugar foods such as lollies/chocolates, soft drinks, cordial, cakes and biscuits.  Some sport drinks or energy drinks can also be harmful to the teeth.

If you have these types of foods, always rinse your mouth with fresh water afterwards, or clean your teeth if your toothbrush is handy.

You can minimize the acid attack on teeth by drinking through a straw; once again though, you need to rinse your mouth with fresh water to dilute and remove the acid that is there.
