Dental Implant FAQ’s

What are dental implants?

Put simply, dental implants are  titanium screws placed into the jawbone, subsequently, have an artificial tooth inserted into it. There are single unit implants where one tooth is replaced,  full arch cases where multiple teeth are replaced with a fixed or removable prosthesis.

The advantage of dental implants is that adjacent teeth do not need to be touched, they are independent of other teeth. whereas  bridges or dentures, have to rely on other teeth to support them.

For this treatment option to be successful, you must have healthy gums and enough bone to support the implant structure. The status of your oral health condition, will determine the longevity of your dental implants. Bone grafting or gum/soft tissue connective  graft may be required prior to the placement of your implant. At Smile House, we offer the latest materials and techniques to enhance your treatment result. We also have an excellent network of local specialists and reputable Australian dental laboratories to help  provide you with the best cosmetic result.

What does the treatment entail?

After having Cone beam scans carried out (used to determine the height and width of the bone structure, so that the correct implant size is provided for the missing tooth site), impressions or scans of your arches are carried out.

An appointment is arranged for the implant/s to be place under local anaesthetic. On occasion sedative medication may be given if you are anxious.

An incision is made in your gum where the missing tooth is, a series of drills are used to create the implant osteotomy site, implant is placed and the area sutured to seal. A period of approximately 3 months is required to allow your bone to grow or integrate on the implant.  Second stage surgery may be required to expose the implant head, healer placed and further month of soft tissue healing required , then construction of the implant crown is carried out.

How long do they last?

The long-term success rate of dental implants is extremely high, as long as you continue with excellent oral health care. Periodically an x-ray may be required to determine that the  sub structure of your bone is maintained in a healthy state. Continual 6 monthly hygiene care is needed to help you maintain your excellent oral health.

Can implants be used with dentures?

Yes, we can effectively attach dentures to implants. The benefit is you won’t have to worry about your teeth moving around when you eat. We offer cost effective implant borne denture prostheses.
