Dental Implant FAQ’s
What are dental implants?
Put simply, dental implants are metal posts that fuse into the jawbone beneath your gums, allowing your dentist to insert artificial teeth on top (think of them as a tooth root). The great thing about dental implants is that they are stable, and won’t move around when you bite into an apple or chew your favourite nuts!
One of the other advantages of dental implants is that you don’t need to prepare or attach anything to adjacent teeth. With most other replacement options such as bridges or dentures, we have to use and rely on other teeth, but implants are independent from other teeth, making them the most natural yet strongest option in most cases.
For this treatment option to work, you must have healthy gums and enough bone to support the structure. We can help you to treat your gum disease, or if you do not have enough bone and need a bone graft or gum graft, we can assist. At Smile House, we use the latest materials and techniques to create a healthy mouth for the best treatment results. We also use an excellent network of local specialists and reputable Australian laboratories to help us provide very high quality treatments for you.
One dental implant can replace one missing tooth. If you need a full upper or lower set of, say, 16 teeth, you may only need four implants for the whole replacement, depending on your jawbone.
What does the treatment entail?
The first step is to create impressions of your mouth so that we can customise your dental implants to your needs. Once they are ready, we will let you know and book you in for your follow-up appointment. Before we begin the treatment, you will be offered a local anaesthetic or sedation to help ensure the operation is pain-free.
An incision is made in your gum above the missing tooth and we will then use drills to prepare the jawbone. Next, the dental implant is screwed into the bone and the gum tissue is stitched back together. It may take a few months for the implant to “take” before we can put the replacement tooth or teeth in place. Once everything is healed and the implant is accepted in the bone, a post will be attached and the tooth or teeth inserted.
How long do they last?
The long-term success rate of dental implants is extremely high on the whole. You can improve their longevity by practising sound oral hygiene. That means brushing twice a day and flossing regularly. Also, don’t forget to book in with us for your dental check-up every six months, so that we can clean your teeth and monitor the progress of your dental implants.
Can implants be used with dentures?
Yes, we can effectively attach dentures to implants. The benefit is you won’t have to worry about your teeth moving around when you eat. We offer mini dental implants – a cost-effective choice that can be used in conjunction with dentures.
