DENTAL FILLINGS

If your teeth have been damaged by decay, you may need a  dental filling. At Smile House, we use a variety of materials for dental fillings, and can tailor your treatment to your preferences. If you haven’t had a dental check-up in a while, or you’re concerned about the health of one of your teeth, please give us a call!

What are fillings?

Fillings are necessary when one or several teeth have been damaged by decay. When this occurs, it’s important to close off the cavity to decay-causing bacteria that may cause further damage. Fillings fill the holes in your teeth and allow them to remain healthy and functional. In some instances, they may be used to repair cracked or broken teeth, or teeth that have eroded.

Fillings may be comprised of a variety of materials, including gold, porcelain, composite materials (like resin) or amalgam (a combination of alloys). We can help you decide what’s right for you, given the location and size of your cavity.

Signs you may need a filling

The best way to find out whether you need a filling is to check in with us. We can perform an examination and x-ray if required to determine the extent of any tooth decay and damage.

If you experience tooth aches or sensitivity when brushing or eating, it’s wise to book in for a dental check-up. Likewise, if you notice a jagged sensation when you run your tongue over a tooth, or your dental floss continually frays between particular teeth, you may need a filling. In some instances, a hole in the tooth may even be visible to the naked eye.

If left untreated, tooth decay can lead to bigger problems. The affected tooth may continue to rot, which could encourage the development of other infections such as gingivitis and gum disease. Eventually, you may have to undergo root canal or have the tooth extracted. The moral of the story? Early detection and treatment is key!

What does the treatment entail?

Before we get started, we may administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area surrounding the tooth. During the treatment, your dentist will remove the decayed tooth material using a drill or other instrument, before thoroughly clean the site.

We may use an adhesive resin to secure and place the filling. We will layer the material on and use a special light to harden it as we go. Lastly, we will polish the tooth to make sure it is not rough to the tongue. The tooth may feel a little different initially, but within a day or two, it should feel normal.

How to avoid fillings

The best way to avoid fillings is to thoroughly clean your teeth morning and night. That means flossing too! Also, schedule yourself in for a six-monthly dental check-up at Smile House, so that we can keep on top of any decay.

How long do they last?

Fillings can last many years, but eventually they may have to be replaced. Their lifespan will depend on the materials used, your oral hygiene and the size of the area treated.
