Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are a fantastic option for patients looking to achieve a full, healthy-looking set of teeth. At Smile House, our dentists are experienced in performing crown and bridge restorative treatments. If you’re concerned about a damaged tooth or a gap, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

What are dental crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are permanent prosthetic structures that are fixed to existing teeth or implants. Unlike dentures, you cannot remove them – they’re there to stay.

A crown or cap is used to cover and protect a damaged tooth whilst improving the aesthetics of your smile. There are many reasons why we may recommend a crown. For example, if we need to replace a large filling with insufficient tooth left, we may suggest a crown. If your tooth is discolored or cracked, a crown may be necessary, or if you’ve had root canal treatment. We can attach crowns to teeth or to implants.

At Smile House, we use a variety of materials for crowns. Your dentist can advise you about which option will best suit your needs. What’s really great is that the crowns can match your teeth’ color and shape, so no one will ever know your secret!

A bridge may be necessary if you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth. Bridges stop other teeth from moving into the empty space. They also help prevent a range of oral health issues from developing.

So, how do they work? First, the bridge is cemented to the adjacent teeth or implants. We then insert a replacement tooth, known as a pontic, into the space. There are a variety of materials available to choose from, and we can help you make the right decision for your particular needs.

What does the treatment entail?

At Smile House, our primary concern is your well-being, so rest assured we will walk you through the process of having crowns and bridges inserted before getting started. We are more than happy to answer any questions you have and to allay any concerns.

The first thing we will need to do is to prepare the tooth and any adjoining teeth. This could involve reducing the tooth size where the crown or bridge is to be inserted. Next, we’ll take an impression of your teeth for the crown or bridge mold. We’ll also take note of the color of your teeth so that we can match the crown or bridge accordingly.

The impression is then sent away to a dental laboratory where your crown or bridge will be made. Your dentist may cover the tooth temporarily to protect it between appointments. Your new crown or bridge will be implanted at your follow-up consultation, leaving you with a complete, healthy-looking smile.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

In some instances, crowns and bridges can last a lifetime. If possible, avoid chewing hard foods that could damage the structure. Practicing good oral hygiene can also help improve the lifespan of your crowns and bridges. We strongly encourage you to brush day and night and to floss regularly. Also, don’t forget to schedule your six monthly dental check-ups at Smile House so that we can keep your teeth in tip-top condition and check your crowns and bridges.
